Safe Chinchilla Herbs

We have listed the ingredients from safest - those that one can not overdose on, to more complex. None of the ingredients here will cause undue harm if someone gets loose and indulges him or herself. 1/4 ounce on most items is about a heaping tablespoon.

All treats/herbs are human food grade for you to enjoy too! They are also safe to use in brewing liqueres and teas.

Rose hips are among the safest supplements as excess vitamin C passes through into urine. Who rosehips make a great treat and c/s means that they have been crushed and the seeds removed. This makes them easier to eat for some chinchillas.

Rosebuds have the same properties as as rose hips and chinchillas love the variety in texture. Red is the largest followed by deep pink, pink and purple. The purple ones are adorably petite and great for small adults and babies. The petals are great to mix in with hay or hide around the cage. The deep pink ones are extremely fragrant and make everything smell lovely!

Globe flowers are a beautiful shimmery purple and Pink colors. They are full of vitamins and minerals and promote calmness and detoxification. These are hilarious to watch chins eat as they like to strip all the little points off very carefully. The purple are softer than the pink - that doens't bother the chins, they eat both with zeal!

Apple blossoms are used in the culinary arts and to make tea. They have a light apple flavor that chinchillas love. Unlike apple seeds and leaves they contain no prussic acid (cyanide) and are safe to use. Apple blossom tea is used to improve digestive function.

Peach blossoms are another that has been used for centuries. They are completely non-toxic and used to soothe and clense the body while removing toxins. In humans they are used to promote skin health. They are fragrant and sweet.

Icana flowers are commonly used in food and teas. They are a sweet flower and go good with desserts.

Carnations are also used to soothe, calm and quiet nervousness. They have been used in the culinary practive for over 2000 years. Chins really love these and will jerk them out of your hands even though they are pretty large.

Honeysuckle is sweet and a very safe herb to use for training on treat rotation. It is used as a garnish and to treat against skin infections and mastitis.

Peony has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine. The flowers are used for teas to increase circiulation and strengthen/clense blood (antioxidants).

Osmanthus flowers have shown to be a neuroprotective and have anti-oxidative effects. They are quite fragrant and have been used in chinese culinary dishes and teas since ancient times.

Nettle is an excellent source of iron and vitamins A, C, D, K and the B complex as well as a host of other trace elements. Very beneficial for those who are recovering and need a little extra boost.

Dandelion Root is a diuretic and assists with clearing up soft stool. It also contains vitamins A, C, D, potassium and the B complex as well as a host of other trace elements.

Use less of; Traditionally you would use less of these ingredients - 1 to 8 parts, or 1TSP in a mix with at least 1 Cup other ingredients.
Tiger Lily is a very popular garnish and used in teas. In the orient it is widely used as an antiinflammatory and to treat issues of the female reproductive system.

Lavender is very popular to cook with and has been domesticated and used for over 2,500 years. It is used for it's soothing effects and antibacterial properties. It is pretty strong smelling and tasting, best to use in small quantities.

These are the same as c/s hibiscus, just the whole flower. They are easier to feed as one off treats, where the c/s is usually used for mixing in supplements

Jasmine is believed to have strong antibacterial, antiviral and anti-tumor properties.

Chamomile has a very calming effect and is great if your chinchilla is easily stressed and sensitive to change. Combined with lavender some people have had success with helping fur chewers. Not recommend for use in pregnant females.

Calendula Petals are an antiseptic and improve blood flow to wound areas promoting faster healing and used to treat ulcers. They are also a well known antifungal agent.

Use Sparingly: 1/16 (1 part to 16 parts something else) or 1/2 TSP to 1 cup other ingredients.
Papaya leaf is an extrodinary and often overlooked part of the Papaya plant. It has been used for centuries to reduce the formation of kidney stones and treat fermentative idigestion. For chins with kindney stone issues, this is a very useful herb.

The items below can be fed strait to chinchillas; you can sprinkle bee pollen in with their food for an extra boost or dip an apple stick in it for an exciting treat.
Bee pollen is consedered a superfood and contains a spectrum of B-complex; B1, B2, B5, B6, B12, C, D and E.

Goji Berries or Wolfberry is considered a superfruit and is a powerful antioxidant. Chins love these when fed sparingly. We feed once or twice a week.

Chinchillas love poplar buds, many of you have gotten samples of them in your previous orders and we are finally able to offer them for sale. They are used to combat cough, sore throat, inflammation and joint discomfort. Bees collect the resin from these buds and it is made into antibiotic and antifungal propolis.

Our chinchilla supplement is specifically balanced for a chinchilla's digestive system and is pure herbs with no hay filler. It assists with re-balancing the gut after trauma and to help with weight gain and boosting the immune system. It includes a 9 grain oat blend, dandelion leaf, elder berries, flax, hibiscus, chamomile flowers, jasmine flowers, oatstraw, red clover blossoms, nettle, papaya leaf, calendula and c/s rosehips. We feed 1tsp per chin.
